Drie jaar na de intrede van de eerste dames in het leger worden, op 1 september 1978, de eerste vrouwelijke leerlingen ingelijfd in de KMS met de 133ste Polytechnische Promotie en de 118de Promotie Alle Wapens.
Toch waren zij niet de eerste vrouwelijke kandidaten! Tijdens de academische zitting ter gelegenheid van de opening van het academiejaar 1957-1958 op donderdag 14 november 1957 vermeldt generaal-majoor Henri Vanvreckom een inschrijving van een jongedame, een briljante laureate van een lyceum : "Je crois en passant pouvoir relever que l'École, certainement pour la première fois dans son histoire, a reçu une demande féminine d'inscription. Il s'agissait d'une très brillante lauréate d'un lycée de jeunes filles ! Peut-être faut-il y voir un signe des temps !" *.
De inschrijving werd uiteraard niet aanvaard, aangezien de wet toen niet toestond dat vrouwen in het leger dienden.
*"Ik denk dat ik terloops mag opmerken dat de school, voor het eerst in haar geschiedenis, een vrouwelijke inschrijving heeft ontvangen. Het betrof een briljante laureate van een meisjesschool! Misschien moet dit worden gezien als een teken des tijds".
