At the Royal Military Academy students can be awarded with several distinctions. The most prestigious one is undoubtfully the King's Sword.
The laureate is a student from the Polytechnical faculty (POL) or from the faculty of Social and military sciences. He or she is selected because of his or her results obtained in the different fields of the bachelor programme.
The King's Sword is yearly attributed on the occasion of the official opening ceremony of the academic year and the ceremonial welcome of the new promotions. In 2009, the price was attributed by His Royal Highness Prince Philippe. This year, on Thursday 6 October 2011, the distinction was attributed by General Van den Put (Head of the King's Military House) to 2nd Lieutenant Matthieu De Naeyer during the ceremony at the Parc de Cinquantenaire (in the presence of thousand spectators).
