Welcome to the department of conflict studies.

We hope here you will find all necessary information about our training courses and also practical information about our organization. For any additional information, do not hesitate to contact us.

The department of conflict studies is unique in Belgium. It researches all aspects of mainly armed conflict, interstate and other, both now and in the past and against a geographical background.

The department is divided in three chairs.

In the history chair, students are being taught, alongside military history and the history of air and sea wars, the classical historical subjects of historical criticism, history of Belgium, history of international relations and Belgian foreign policy.

The chair world politics looks at international relations and security, its organizations, strategy and geopolitics but with the emphasis on (military) conflict.

The COST department also features in the core curriculum at university level for candidate officers from home and abroad (Benin, Burundi, Congo-Brazzaville, Congo-Kinshasa, Gabon, Cameroon, Luxembourg, Niger, Rwanda, Togo and Tunisia).

It also contributes to the continuous post-graduate education of officers from home and abroad (Algeria, Benin, Burundi, Canada, Congo-Brazzaville, Congo-Kinshasa, Germany, Gabon, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Netherlands, Niger, Rwanda, Tunisia, USA and Switzerland).

The department tries to help the scientific understanding of conflicts through research, seminars and conferences.

Thanks to scientific research, the involvement of “civilian” teachers and visibility in the media, our department would like to add its weight to the public debate on the military and the armed conflicts in the past and present.
